2009 has seen a significant rise in threats and an explosion in unique malware threats. The industry has quickly realised that traditional approaches to antivirus solutions are not enough to protect against today’s threats. Traditional antivirus applications protect you using file signature rules and heuristic/behavioural capabilities.
Our prediction for 2010 is that we will see the infection rate reach levels where new malicious programs are actually being created and distributed at a higher rate than good clean applications. The antivirus industry is looking into technologies such as "reputation based security" so that no longer will it just make sense to focus solely on analysing malware, file signatures, etc., but also what the source of the information or file is and how trusted it can be.
