Botnet wakes up again after a short rest in 2010

Q4 of 2010 saw a dramatic fall in the volume of spam (unsolicited) emails due to a few large botnets going inactive.

One of the botnets known as Rustock was at its peak in the summer of 2010 responsible for 47% of all spam.  However in December 2010 this fell to just 1%.  At the same time several other botnets (Waledac, Lethic and Xarvester) also dropped off on the volumes.

There is no evidence to suggest that any of these botnets have been disrupted and as such it remains a mystery as to why the volume of spam has declined.

Sadly, the respite was short lived because this week has seen the Waledac botnet wake up again and continue to spam users with pharmaceutical-based topics. Symantec Response Centre reports that it has seen over 1400 active Waledac bots in the last 24 hours and increasing.
