Whilst there is still a significant growth in spam email this volume will not be sustainable in the longer term.  That being said it's clear that spammers are not willing to give up on sending unsolicited email whilst the economic return is so good.

As the current economy continues to suffer in the recession more and more companies and people seek to take advantage of cheaper forms of marketing such as email marketing.  Although email marketing is not necessarily spam it can be seen as spam if its not done correctly.  Prolateral recently published an article about email marketing not being spam.

Our prediction for 2010 is to see continued growth in spam and a larger increase in the volume of emails as more and more companies use forms of email marketing; some not so legitimate.  The knock on effect of this will see more companies selling unauthorised email addresses.  Spammers will continue to take advantage of the loose restrictions in the CAN SPAM Act and an increase in non-english spam is more likely.

As social networking sites grow exponentially the use of Instant Messaging will likewise increase.  Our prediction for 2010 is that IM threats will largely comprise of unsolicited spam messages that could also contain hyperlinks to malicious sites.
