On Tuesday 15th February the BBC radio streaming websites were hacked and pages on the sites were linking to malware.  Both BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC 6 Music had pages on their sites compromised causing malicious code to be downloaded from a website with a .co.cc top level domain.

The .CC TLD (Top Level Domain) is for the Cocos Islands and although the domain is reporting to be from the Cocos Islands the actual server wasn’t in the Islands but elsewhere.

The malware was generated by the Phoenix exploit kit which date backs at least four years.  This particular variant on Tuesday was only picked up by nine of the top 43 antivirus products. One of the nine being ESET’s NOD32 recognising it as a variant of Win32/Kryptik.KRH.

It is unknown how the hackers managed to compromise the BBC’s sites but measures have been put in place to block further such attacks.
