Moving to Cloud-based Internet services instead of in-house servers appeals to many companies who are seeking a more lean and mobile operation.
The "cloud" is a hot buzzword at the moment, but moving the bulk of your infrastructure and data there isn't right for every business. Most small companies plug along with a mix of on-site and off-site hardware and software. Nearly 7% of businesses with less than 100 employees use a cloud solution and another 6% plan to add a cloud service in the next 12 months.
However before you take the plunge to the cloud there are several services you need to ensure are working reliably and with failover fault tolerance.
Your Internet Connection
When the Internet is down, so is your cloud-dependent business services. Worse still, if your Internet connection is provided by a DSL provider, the service level options are not always able to provide a rapid resolution. Consider the option of having multiple Internet Connections to the office so you don't lose service with your cloud.
DNS – Domain Name Services
Many small companies purchase their domain name with a company and the DNS records are typically hosted on one DNS server or sometimes a second DNS server with the same company. So if your domain name provider goes down so does your business.
Backup DNS (also known as secondary DNS) is a great way to ensure your domain name doesn't fall off the Internet even if your provider does.
